Living Museum

Living Museum is designed to sit south of Manhattan, just east of the Statue of Liberty.

Constructed out of recycled metal scaffolding, the open-tiered structure design references the endless construction projects and scaffolding scattered throughout New York City. The scaffolding in the museum serves as a natural habitat for birds and other marine life to gather and shelter around, providing needed habitat space. A floating concrete foundation houses oysters, barnacles, and fish beneath the surface. Rising and lowering with the tides, the museum is viewed by boat only and its sole exhibit is the wildlife that build their homes throughout the tower. Living Museum is literally a living, breathing, ever-transforming exhibition and museum, wrapped into one.

Living Museum was designed and created in collaboration with Giulanna Vaccarino-Gearty and Diedre Nolan for the 2020 Reimagining Museums for Climate Action architecture competition. Out of thousands of submissions, our design was selected to be featured in their digital and print publications as an honorary mention.
